Dharti Pe Bhoj

The title in Hindi can be literally translated as “Burden on the earth”. You guessed it wrong, I am not swearing at anyone. This write up aims to share an important concept which I learnt about recently, namely, ‘ecological footprint’.

The ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on the Earth's ecosystems. It compares human demand with planet Earth's ecological capacity to regenerate. It represents the amount of biologically productive land and sea area needed to regenerate the resources a human population consumes and to absorb and render harmless the corresponding waste.

Using this assessment, it is possible to estimate how much of the Earth (or how many planet Earths) it would take to support humanity if everybody lived a given lifestyle.

Now, you might just be wondering how this applies to you.

Well, instead of writing further about “how YOU can know as to how much of a ‘Dharti Pe Bhoj’ you are”, I would very strongly suggest you do a little bit of research on the internet and find out for yourselves. The findings will surely be an eye opener.
